Tips on Installing Bathroom Wall Tile

Whether you are renovating your entire home or simply feel that it is time to give your bathroom new life, installing new bathroom wall tile can provide you with your desired result. While it is much more convenient, hiring a seasoned pro to install your wall tile can end up costing more than five times than the cost of installing the bathroom wall tile yourself. If you have the funds to settle for convenience, that's great. However, most of us are not willing to pay such an inflated price for something we could very well do ourselves. If you are opting to install your new bathroom tile yourself, here are two tips that will make the process of installing them seamless.

Preparation is Key

If you are a complete newbie to installing bathroom tile, do yourself a favor and don't try to "wing it". This is already a foreign process to you, completing it successfully will be a task in itself. Increase your chances of completing your bathroom wall tile installation by having all of the necessary tools at hand and educating yourself on the topic. Make it a point to watch several "How to" videos online and read articles that entail the proper methods of installing tile. Additionally, you should have every tool on hand that is necessary to complete the task effectively; if the process calls for a chalk line and a partner, don't use a ruler and do it alone.

Accuracy

Do you have near-flawless hand eye coordination? If so, that's an asset when playing baseball, but it just won't cut it when installing bathroom tile. As with any intricate project, accuracy is necessary because if you place just one tile crooked, the entire wall will be ruined. To ensure that your hard work pays off in the way that you would like it to, invest in some quality measuring tools. After all, these tools are there for a reason; to make your life easier. It's a smart idea to take advantage of the accuracy these tools provide, even if it means spending a few extra bucks; because they will help ensure that you place each tile in its place. Tools that professional contractors use to help ensure accuracy when installing tiles are spirit levels, laser tape and chalk lines. All of these items tend to be relatively inexpensive ranging from $10 to $70.

Bathroom Decor Made Elegant

Besides the bedroom, the other room that you would want to have a lot of privacy in is the bathroom. While a bedroom may also qualify as a private area in the house, it is only in the bathroom that you are able to do the most private of all your cleaning rituals, which is cleaning your whole body. Some people take a few minutes to take a bath while others who indulge in the activity can take as much as an hour or more to finish! If in your case you are one of those who stay long inside the bathroom, then wouldn't it be nice to have a unique bathroom decor?

There are people who really think and take time out and even spend so much to give their bathrooms a sense of their identity. They want to make sure that when somebody else uses the room, a part of their self is expressed through the bathroom decor and accents that they have inside it. Others just want to make their guests at home and as comfortable as they can be when using their bathrooms.

If you are at a loss on what unique bathroom decor can be used to magically transform your bathroom without having to spend too much, then luxury bath rugs are the answer. In choosing these rugs, make sure they match the dominant color or the tiles in your bathroom. Aside from the color, take into consideration that the rug will serve not only as a bathroom decor but also as moisture controller so pick out one that is made of absorbent material.

The size of your luxury bath rugs will also matter. Decide whether you want the whole rug to cover the entire floor or will it just be enough to cover half of the floor area. Remember that when you choose not to cover every inch of the bathroom floor, the amount of bare floor should be even on each side of the rug. If you find it hard to decide how much area to cover, first use some adhesive tape to mark your area choices and then choose which is best.

Using bathroom rugs as bathroom decor can be fun. Depending on what theme or identity you would like your bathroom to express to every user, you can play with stripes, checks or solid colors and other designs that are eye-catching and visually appealing. Of course, take into consideration all the other items in your bathroom so that the rug you choose will match them. You don't want to change your basic bathroom items since this will mean added cost again.

A bathroom decor can certainly create special effects in your bathrooms. They can entertain people when taking long baths and minimizes the boredom of doing a daily routine. You don't need to invest on expensive items as decorations. All you need is a little creativity and imagination to glam up your bathroom. With just the right designs, colors and sizes, you can transform your ordinary bathroom into a luxurious place for pampering.

Choosing A Walk In Bathtub

Walk in bathtubs are becoming increasingly popular, not only for those who in their senior years find themselves wanting to remain independent, but also for those who are approaching the baby boomer years and preparing for retirement.

With so many models and options now flooding the market, choosing a walk in bathtub can be difficult. Walk in bathtubs are sold on the web under a variety of names and website addresses. If you want to be sure of what you are buying, contact the manufacturer for information about the product. Look for upfront answers to the following questions:

How long have you been manufacturing walk in bathtubs?
What is the price?
Can my local plumber or installer do the installation?
Where can I see the bathtub?
What is the warranty?
Does the bathtub hold more water than a regular bathtub?
Does the tub have CSA/UL certification?
What options are available?
How does your tub differ from other walk in bathtubs on the market?

Beware of companies who try to sell you a walk in bathtub whether it is the right choice for you or not. Walk in bathtubs are not for people who are wheelchair bound and cannot transfer. People who suffer from Alzheimers; someone who could not be left alone to use a stove, should not be left alone to bathe. If you have concerns about the ability of an individual to use the walk in bath, express those concerns. A credible manufacturer will be honest about who the users of their product should be.

It is wise to remember that convenience, comfort and safety should be the main objective you are purchasing a walk-in bathtub.

Selecting the Right Shower Door For Your Bath

The typical shower door consists of two pieces mounted across the opening, there are many other varieties available to you today. The relative cost of an upgrade is marginal. For very little it can build of very nice glass or even it is frameless, which gives you the illusion of not having a shower door at all.

Enclosure
The enclosure should make your bathroom feel like a comfortable place to be in. A good enclosure will probably be made of glass and can be either a clear or a obscured glass to provide more privacy.

Glass
This is the most basic type. You can add a little something to this type by adding frosted or obscured glass to give you more privacy. However, the most popular type is a clear glass which allows you to show off the inside of your shower. A glass door can come mounted in gold, silver or a small variety of other colors.

Frameless
A frameless door is for the finest of homes. Many upgrades and new construction homes are being replaced or installed with a frameless door. This stylish door does not have the frame that a typical shower door sits in so it will not ever go out of style. A frameless door appears to be floating, not like your typical one which can appear heavy and cumbersome.

Sterling
A sterling shower door is a great buy. They are manufactured under the Kohler brand name, so you know you will be buying quality.

Basco
Basco shower doors are another well known name and come in a very wide variety of colors and finishes. They are also a leaders in innovative designs. They use specially treated glass and aluminum, so you can rest assured that you have the best that money can buy.

Great Ideas For a Bathroom Makeover

If you're like I am, you want your entire home to look wonderful. This will definitely include one of the most necessary rooms in your home, your bathroom. A lot of people favor a large, relaxing bathroom. After all, it can provide a welcome retreat after a long, hard day. By running a nice, hot bath and adding a few bubbles and scented candles, you've got the greatest way in the world to relax and forget your troubles.

One thing I can't stand is a cluttered, messy room. How about you? I like things neat, so cleaning up a bunch of junk can make a lot of difference in the feeling of a room. I can also see myself relaxing in one of those huge sunken tubs, or how about a skylight with a skylight above and the feeling of showering in a warm spring rain? Color is another important item, and I must say that I prefer the more neutral shades in my bathroom. I couldn't face the shock of overly-bright colors first thing in the morning, because I'm not a morning person by any stretch of the imagination.

My fittings have got to be very contemporary and shiny. None of the Victorian frills for me, thank you! However, I'd still like a few nice plants around. We're just not living in the 1890s any longer. We've come into the 21st century, and the trends are sleek and modern. If you have any lingering ideas about hokey 20th century remnants such as fish, seashells, and the like, you need to take your ideas to the beach and leave them out of your bathroom. Nothing in my bathroom will be ornate or gaudy!

One of the reasons I don't want the ornate look (even if I liked it, that is) is because that stuff is hard to keep clean. I want a bathroom I can clean easily. I want tiled walls, and if I had my preference, I'd want one whole wall filled with nothing but mirror tiles. Having all those mirrors will make the room look much larger and more open and has nothing to do with me wanting to admire myself. Plus, I know that the home decorating shows advocate using stenciled tiles, but that's not on my list. The plainer the better as far as I'm concerned.

Those home makeover shows aren't all bad, though. You can get some really great ideas from them. Just be sure to weed out the ideas that no civilized person would ever want in a bathroom, like walls covered with feathers, and you'll be fine.

I've got to tell you about a program I saw the other day. It was showing a gorgeous apartment that had been completely redone by the trendy young folks who were living there. Most of the space was very attractive and very open, but the bathroom facilities struck me as a little strange. For one, because the couple didn't like walls, their fantastic two-person tub was sitting in the middle of the space where everyone could see it.

In addition, although there was a divider in front of the toilet, it was of clear glass, so everyone could see you there, too. The husband said that they had done that so that when he was conversing with his wife he didn't want to have to stop if his wife felt the call to use the facilities. It seems to me that she could hear through a more opaque wall, too. I suspicion it was the seeing he was interested in more than the hearing, anyway.

As you can see, whatever your style is, you can make it happen. You may not want to go quite as far out in your design as that young couple did, but I'm sure you have your own ideas just as I have mine. You can make them a reality with a little inspiration and thoughts revolving around your own, personal tastes.

Bathroom Wall Mirrors - Tips For Keeping Yours Fog Free

Keeping the bathroom wall mirrors fog free is one of the most challenging situations we face every morning. Wall mirrors usually get foggy due to the hot shower steam that gets condensed on it. If you are tired of the fog that forms on the mirror, here are some useful tips to help you.

Suggestions For A Fog Free Mirror

• Keep you bathroom as spacious and airy as possible. Bathrooms that are well-ventilated are less prone to mirror fog.

• Try and invest in technologically advanced bathroom wall mirrors. Nowadays, there are many manufacturers who offer fog-free mirrors. These mirrors can be installed on the bathroom mirror cabinets too. They use the mirror-warming technology to keep the mirror smog-free.

• You could also have a built-in vent fan installed in your bathroom. Keep the fan running while you shower so that fog does not collect on your mirror.

• If you are alone in your home then you could also consider keeping the bathroom door open while you shower. Just keep the bathroom mirror light open.

• If nothing seems to work, then purchase a small squeegee and a no-fog cloth. You can find both these items in any hardware store. Once you have them, all you need to do is to wipe the mirror with them every time fog accumulates.

• You can even use the hair dryer to keep the mirror clean. Here remember to keep your hands absolutely dry lest you get a shock.

• Also try a cold water spray for a couple of seconds after a hot shower. A cold spray quickly condenses the steam from not only your bathroom wall mirrors but also the whole bathroom.

The above mentioned tips will help you achieve fog free bathroom wall mirrors.

Small Bathroom Lighting

Small bathrooms might be those added under a stairway or in a spare closet. They might be for children, adults, or both. A small bathroom might be a guest powder room off the foyer or living room. One thing they have in common is that they are – small. Another thing they have in common is that they call for special lighting.

Small bathroom lighting is dependent, in part, on the use of the bathroom. One type of bathroom light fixture might convey a warm, cozy feeling for dinner guests. Another type of bathroom light fixture might make the small bathroom seem spacious – or provide light for reading while relaxing in a deep soak tub.

Warm and Cozy Lighting

You can make a small bathroom feel warm and cozy rather than claustrophobic by adding the right light fixtures. Suppose this is a small half-bath meant primarily for guests to "freshen up" before dinner. You've used small-patterned deep red and gold wallpaper for warmth. What kind of light fixtures should this small bathroom have?

Try recessed, can ceiling light fixtures focused on work areas. Or use indirect lighting around the perimeter of the ceiling-wall junction. On either side of the mirror above the sink, add a wall sconce light fixture. Avoid large wall sconces, or those that protrude too far from the wall, as they will make the room look cluttered. Layering these two types of light fixture will give you warm, gracious lighting in a small bathroom for guests.

Bright Enough for Reading

If the small bathroom in your home has a soaking tub, or one used by children, you will want good lighting in the tub area. Most lighting above tubs and showers is diffuse lighting, which is fine for a quick shower or bath. Diffuse lighting is also good over-all lighting to soften the entire bathroom. However, if you want to read – or get paint off of a child – you may want brighter, more concentrated lighting. Use a focused flood or halogen light fixture on the wall above the tub.

Choose safe, moisture proof light fixtures for this area. "Make sure that your lamps are UL rated for damp locations insuring safety," says Todd Phillips, president of lighting manufacturer Quoizel.

Space Enlarging Lighting

You can never have too much light in a small bathroom, as long as you use it properly. Perhaps the best idea for small bathrooms is to begin with indirect lighting around the ceiling for overall softness and warmness. Then consider these possibilities.

1. If your small bathroom has a window, use light-admitting, sheer curtains at the window. Add a shade that can be drawn for privacy.

2. Light shower or tub with separate wet area light fixtures, strong enough to permit easy personal grooming, but with dimmer switches for atmosphere.

3. On either side of the vanity mirror, use warm fluorescent vertical wall sconces to provide even facial illumination. Place a halogen light above the mirror for cross illumination. Place these mirror surrounding light fixtures on a separate switch.

4. Run a linear light fixture along the vanity toe-space to provide a soft night light.

5. For a family use small bathroom, place a halogen or flood light near the toilet, focused as a good reading light. Install a separate switch.

With all of these light fixtures layered in a small bathroom, you will always have exactly the amount of light you need for any given task. Yet you can make it cozy with dimmer switches, safe with night lights.

Helpful Tip

Small bathroom lighting need not be garish or insufficient. You can have plenty of light or cozy lighting if you layer your light, and control it with separate and/or dimmer switches.

Cheap Bathrooms on a Tight Budget

Many gentlemen have fallen on hard times over the last few months and many of them don't think about fixing up their flat and making it nicer. Because no one has any pounds to spare to go out to the pub during the week or on the weekends, in might be nice to spend what we do have on fixing up the flat, a bit. Since we are going to be home more often, we might as well fix it up, so that we are in nice surroundings. The big question is what do we fix up first? We can make rounds around the house, drinking some tea and check out what needs a makeover. As we walk through the kitchen, we see that it has just been remolded by the blokes that lived here before us.

We stumble into the living room and notice how warm and cozy it is and shouldn't be messed with. We take a peak in the bedroom and notice that we just fixed this room up when we moved in. All this walking around and drinking tea has caused us to need to use the loo. We walk into the toilet and immediately we notice how this is it, this is the room that is in need of an extreme makeover. We begin to notice all the things we can do and before we leave the toilet, we have a few items that can be replaced or upgraded in record time and very affordable.

The first item we want to improve in our toilet is the tile, it is stained and pitiful and we want to brighten it up a bit. The key element in doing this is to add color to the tile and have it go with the rest of the toilet.

The next items that can always be upgraded are the cabinets. If the hinges are coming loose or the edges need a spot of paint, this can be taken care with one trip to the store. The cabinets are the first item blokes see when they enter the toilet and set the standard of everything else.

Lighting is very important in any toilet, especially when a woman is putting on her face, replacing light bulbs or getting a new fixture is an easy way for us to get more out of our trips to the toilet.

Every time we use the toilet, we generally run the water and we need the loo to run properly and the water to stream well. Fixing plumbing problems will alleviate a lot of the family's aggravation and make you a hero in the home.

Often times, we don't look at the wall in toilet, the same we do the rest of the flat. It can be fantastic and be a great addition to the décor of the room, if we include some artwork and pictures on the walls of the toilet.

The final way you can upgrade the toilet is to make it entertaining, by adding a tele or music in the room. Sometimes, when we go to pubs and have to use the toilet, they now have teles on the walls in the toilet. We can do the same things in our toilets, by making room for a tele; so we can take a bath and watch our favorite football match or "Pop Idol."

How to Remodel A Small Bathroom

Not all bathrooms can be lavish spaces with whirlpool tubs and two separate vanities. For some bathrooms, space is at a premium and knocking out walls is not an option, but remodeling must be done. Small bathroom remodeling presents its own complications, but with the right information, a small bathroom-remodeling project can shine.

Before beginning your small bathroom remodeling, design a floor plan that maximizes the room's useable space. Don't be afraid to design up by incorporating free-floating cabinets. Use mirrors to stretch a small bathroom's space, and keep the color scheme simple. Keep a small bathroom bright, fresh, and inviting with coordinated colors and accessories.

Pare down the scale in your bathroom. Big items take up more space in the bathroom and look bulky. Corner sinks are simple and small. These sinks free up visual space below, but don't provide the counter space and cabinet space that a traditional sink provides. Another option is a pedestal sink. These sinks have a more classic design and are free standing. Wall-mounted sinks save space but do not have counter space. Both types of sinks do not provide storage space underneath. Most home-improvement stores stock smaller sinks, or you can custom order one from a cabinet shop for a price.

A simple way to conserve space is to do away with a tub and just use a shower. Smaller tubs, however, are available, although most cannot handle whirlpool faucets. Any tub less than five feet long will probably spill the water sprayed by the whirlpool faucets.

Pick a toilet that can sit close to the wall to conserve space, and the size of the seat and tank design determine just how much space the toilet will use. Also pay attention to the size of the home's original toilet. Older homes have toilets with 10 to 14 inches between the wall and the toilet drain, but newer homes typically have 12 inches. The wrong toilet won't fit. Buying a toilet with a low tank takes up less visual space and compact toilets leave more room, but as with any small bathroom remodeling project, use these suggestions to find a toilet that is both stylish and fits in the room.
Finally, limit what you bring into the bathroom. To save space in a cramped bathroom, for example, it may be best to have a dressing area in a bedroom. Limit the number of accessories -- clutter can easily make a small bathroom look smaller.

Planning a small remodeling may take extra planning, but the resulting clean, beautiful, an uncluttered bathroom will be an inviting space.

The Secret To Decorating A Small Bathroom

A small space may seem especially easy to decorate, but in fact, if you spend a lot of time in there trying to make decisions, you may find that the small space is getting smaller every moment. A bathroom can be even more troubling in the fact that it has to be functional, but since others will use it when they come to visit; you want it to be aesthetically pleasing also.

The key to making a small room bigger is openness and airiness. It may seem impossible to do it with no windows or one small window in a tiny bathroom that hardly affords you room to stand. Yet, with the right combination of color and décor if space allows, you'll feel like your bathroom has grown by leaps and bounds.

It's a fact that if you ask most people where they might imagine having an open and airy feeling, they'd somehow bring up the beach or the ocean. It's natural to feel that way because you do have warm breezes typically on a beach and the beach is visually open and expansive so you feel very open and airy. This feel can be accomplished through the use of the right tools in your bathroom even if it's in the dankest of basements.

Color is incredibly important here. You will want to choose a color that leads one to think open and airy thoughts. My first recommendation would be an ocean blue. This would tend to lead one to thoughts of the very open ocean. If blue does not suit you, try a lighter green. This would also tend to lead one to thoughts of a field or open grassy area; also something that creates the illusion of openness.

If you choose blue and go with the ocean analogy, you may choose to accessorize your bathroom with shells collected from the beach. It doesn't take a lot of space to put a few shells on a blue or white decorative plate and place them in the corner of the countertop on your sink or perhaps place it on the lid of the back of the toilet. Candles are another accessory that you can buy in all kinds of colors that will add to the open atmosphere of your newly designed bathroom. If you have wall space, a picture depicting a beach scene will only add to the open feel you're trying to achieve.

If the beach is not for you and you'd rather use greens and yellows to make one think of the open fields or the prairie, this is another option. In this case, replace the seashells with dried clumps of wheat or other decorative grasses on a green or yellow decorative plate. Use green, yellow, or even deep red candles. And put a picture of an open prairie with perhaps and windmill on the wall.

To create the illusion of openness, you want to use something that is open in reality. This will make there seem to be more space and soon you'll wonder what to do with the new space you've created. There will be so much and it will be so well decorated you won't remember what you didn't like about it.
